It may seem odd at first that Hymer’s Van range is not a van conversion at all, but the most compact of low-profile coachbuilts. An overall width of 2.22m marks them out as usefully slimmer than the norm – ideal both in the city and on rural backroads.
A change from Fiat cabs on earlier ones, to Mercedes means a longer nose, and therefore overall
dimensions stretch the tape to 6.36m for this 520. These models are in every way similar to their Fiat cousins, but the bond between the two Teutonic top-quality marques – Hymer and Mercedes-Benz – is a strong one and many a Hymer customer prefers to have the cachet of a three-pointed star up front.
Coincidentally, this longest Van model measures exactly the same from bumper to bumper as an extra-long Fiat/Peugeot van conversion – and it shares a similar twin bed layout to many of that breed, too. Where it differs is in offering a full-sized garage at the rear, plus, with a huge payload of 1010kg courtesy of it’s chassis upgrade, – you really can take full advantage of that loadspace, unlike in so many larger coachbuilts.
The rear-wheel drive Sprinter chassis also offers an advantages for those wishing to tow, (towing
capacity is up to two tonnes). With the Mercedes chassis come other advantages, including the optional – and delightfully smooth – 7G-Tronic Plus (torque convertor) automatic gearbox.
The Truma heating system with a power of 3000 W is installed as standard, the interior lighting uses LED technology. An iNet LCD control panel with a timer is also fitted as standard – this allows for individual adjustment of various settings, e.g. heating and water temperature.
The waste water tank is insulated and heated. The motorhome is also equipped with an electric
discharge of pollutants from the grey water tank as standard.
This 520 houses a dining room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and various types of lockers and wardrobes. The advantage is the well-lit lounge and dining area , which is owed to three windows in this part.
Integrated within the window, are double roller blinds, used both to shade the interior and protect against insects.
There is a drawer for cutlery and kitchen utensils under the single-chamber sink and the two-burner
stove. An 85-liter Thetford refrigerator, and next to it, there is a pull-out pantry, i.e. a place for pasta, cereals or things that do not require cooling. The manufacturer also thought about a cloth holder.
An important advantage of the bathroom is the skylight , which has a positive effect on lighting, and also optically enlarges the space. In addition, the window provides ventilation. In the bathroom you will find a shelf with a mirror, a Thetford electric flush swivel toilet and a foldable washbasin plus a shower with duck board.
Finally, the spacious rear bedroom. Two single beds with steps to walk up to them, no awkward ladder. Memory foam mattress’s, subdued touch lighting, overhead cupboard storage, wardrobe plus the
bedroom can be seperated from the rest of the camper if required.
Despite it having the chassis upgrade to 3880KG which will require a C1 licence to drive, if you wanted it downgraded to 3500KG, you’ll only loose 380KG of payload but this still leaves a considerable amount. The process takes circa 10 days, and costs around the £200 mark.
Non standard options include: Automatic Transmission, Multimedia System, Sat Nav, Reversing Camera and Alarm.
